FAQ – Awards and Fellowships

Please see the following list for questions you may have regarding the awards and fellowships offered by AFPE. If you do not see an answer to your question, contact the AFPE office via email.

Applicant Questions:

“I am having trouble getting an official transcript to AFPE by the application deadline.”

AFPE will accept late transcripts so long as you notify us by email, however, we will need an official transcript sent (electronically or by mail) by the registrar prior to evaluating your application.

“I am in my third semester of PhD study now. Am I eligible?”

Yes. Be sure to have a transcript sent by the deadline showing 3 full semesters of graduate credit toward the Ph.D. Please see all eligibility requirements listed on each award’s eligibility page for full details.

“I am enrolled in a PharmD/PhD program. Am I eligible?”

Joint Pharm.D./Ph.D. students who have completed the equivalent of 3 full semesters of graduate credit toward the Ph.D. and will be awarded the Ph.D. degree within 3 additional years may be eligible for a pre-doctoral fellowship. Students enrolled in a joint program are not eligible for a Gateway Award.  Please see all eligibility requirements listed on each award’s eligibility page for full details.

“Are there any awards offered for international students?”

At this time, only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply.

“May I include references in the research plan? Does the list of references count towards the word count limit for the section?”

Yes, please include references. They do not count towards the word count.

“In what format should I list references, articles, publications, etc.?”

Citations should be Vancouver Style.

“I completed Part 1, but can’t log in to Part 2”

To access part 2 a link will be sent to you upon completing Part 1. If you did not, please email AFPE.

“If I apply for a specific award (i.e. Paul Myrdal Fellowship, Health Outcome Disparities Fellowship, Herb and Nina Demuth Award, etc. will I also be considered for the Pre-Doctoral Fellowship?” 

Yes

Fellow and Awardee Questions:

“Toward what may my fellowship stipend be used?”

The Fellowship stipend may be used for a purpose decided by the awardee and college that will enable the student to make progress in their pursuit of the Ph.D., e.g., student stipend, laboratory supplies, books, materials, travel, etc. None of the funds may be used for indirect costs by the institution.
